God I hate winter! Travis thought to himself as he looked out of the window at the several feet of snow on the ground.
Paige was sitting on the couch across the room sipping hot chocolate and watching the local news. When Travis heard the weatherman say that there was a chance of even more snow overnight he groaned and shook his head in disgust.
He walked over to the couch and plopped down beside Paige. He felt incredibly bored and hated the fact that he couldn't just jump in his car and run to town to rent a movie or something. There'd been a ton of accidents due to all of the ice and snow on the roads and the news reporters kept telling people not to drive anywhere unless it was absolutely necessary.
"What the hell is your problem?" Paige asked as she popped another marshmallow into her mug.
"I'm just bored." he yawned, wishing that he was tired enough to take a nap.
"Then go get some more wood for the wood stove."
"Why can't you go get it?"
"Because it's freezing out there! Besides that I could slip and fall."
"So could I!"
"Yeah, but it would be funny if you did. I'd laugh."
"Thanks, you're all heart."
"That's what people say."
She turned her attention back to the news where a local man was talking to a reporter about his cows. Apparently when he'd gone out to check them that morning they'd been slaughtered.
"Hey, that's Brian Butler! He lives right down the street!" Travis gushed.
"No shit, now shut up so I can hear this!"
Brian went on to tell the reported how it had looked like someone had taken a chainsaw to his poor cows. He said that he'd never seen anything like it in his life and he didn't have a clue as to what could have done it.
"I know what did it." Paige said smugly.
"What? A bear?"
"Yes, because there are so many of those around here."
"Then what was it, smartass?"
"Snow sharks."
"What the hell is a snow shark?"
"They're sharks that live in the snow. Duh!"
"Give me a break!"
"They're real, my uncle used to talk about them all the time. He said that he almost caught one when he was younger. He said that they were vicious bastards, he saw one eat a little boy once."
"Would this be the same uncle who was abducted by aliens and once shared a sandwich with Bigfoot?"
"Screw you." she snarled, turning the channel to a basic cable network that was showing some chick flick that she'd seen a million times.
Not wanting to suffer through the movie yet again, Travis put on his shoes and headed for the door.
"Where are you going?" Paige asked.
"Out dancing and maybe to see a show on Broadway."
"Huh?"
"Nothing dear, just watch your movie, I'm going to get fire wood."
"Be careful, if there are snow sharks out thereā¦"
"If I see one I'll invite it in for some hot chocolate."
Paige said something as he was walking out the door but he didn't really hear what it was. He walked around the side of the house to the woodpile and was slapped in the face with a gust of chilly wind that made him cringe. When he got to the woodpile he grabbed a few logs and turned around to make his way back inside where it was warm. He'd taken a few steps when he saw something heading toward him out of the corner of his eye.
He turned to get a better look and refused to believe what he saw. Sticking out of the snow was a large shark fin that was heading toward him at a very high rate of speed. He started to run toward the house which proved to be difficult since the snow was up to his knees. He barely made it a few steps when the shark grabbed his leg and pulled him under the surface of the snow so quickly he didn't have time to scream.
Paige realized that he'd been gone a while so when they showed a commercial she decided that she'd better go check on him. Cursing him under her breath she put on her coat and reluctantly stepped outside.
She thought that maybe he'd fallen and knocked himself out but when she walked around the side of the house she knew in her heart what had happened to him. There was a patch of red snow several feet from the woodpile as well as a half-eaten arm and part of a leg.
"Oh God!" she cried, feeling her heart race.
She turned around to hurry back inside when she saw the three fins heading in her direction. She didn't even bother to run as she knew it would be useless considering how fast they were moving toward her. Instead she just dropped to her knees and cried as she prayed that her death would be quick and painless.
It wasn't.
